Water Tower Dinks - August 15, 2008

I looked at the forecast last night and decided to hit the surf this morning. The winds had laid yesterday morning and I thought that if the still conditions continued through this morning, then the surf might be right. When I hit the seawall, the waves were bigger than I expected and the winds were out of the Southwest. The Southwest wind is the worst for surf fishing. I headed toward Surfside and turned in at beach access 6. I was in the water by 6:30AM and started throwing the FLW Black SS in the first gut. The waves were bearable but the water color was dirty. After plugging for fifteen minutes, I called it quits.

Heading back over the pass, I thought I might find a way to drive down to the bay near the water tower. I first fished this spot a decade ago and it is my favorite spot on the upper coast. Recent development has sharply reduced access to the bay and beach in this area, but I found a meandering path that led to the spot. I made a short marsh march and was in the water by 7:30AM. I planned to fish until 9:00AM.

The bay was like glass and bait was everywhere. Tonight is a full moon, so the fish were likely feeding all night. It can be difficult to catch fish in the daytime surrounding a full moon. I was hoping to find reds near shore and began throwing a Mann's baby 1 minus in Blu/Chart. There were no takers in twenty casts, so I switched to the hothead SS jr. I worked my way down the shore fancasting for the most part, but working the drains thoroughly.

I saw a few wakes, but never could get a redfish to bite. I did find a school of dink trout and thoroughly enjoyed the wade. A squall blew in around 8:45AM with 15 knot winds from the West and showers. The bite shut down and I did too.

Date fished: Friday, August 15th
Lunar phase: 1 days before fullmoon
Winds: none early building from Southwest at 15 later in the morning
Water Condition: Sandy
Baits: Hothead SuperSpook jr; Mann's baby 1 minus in Blu/Chart; FLW Black SuperSpook
Fish caught: dink trout
