Flatfish, be warned: Mackenzi is a force to be reckoned with - January 17, 2009

I talked the girls into joining me for a quick trip to fish a little spot I know. As it turns out, it will be an excellent kayak launch and I'm excited about fishing the area. Today we just fished from the bank and enjoyed God's great outdoors and family time. Mackenzi's growing confidence while fishing is wonderful. At the ripe old age of three, Mackenzi caught her first fish, a flounder, with her first ever cast. She broke into tears at the sight of the flounder as it was not what she had envisioned. Well, today Mackenzi caught her second flounder and there were no tears. No uncertainty. Instead, there were yells to "get the net" while reeling and playing the fish. After initially considering keeping the fish for her to feed to her dog, we convinced her that she could either take the fish home for supper or release it. She decided to release it so she could catch him another day.

I thought maybe the redfish would be in deeper water after the cold spell this week. Maybe if the temps had warmed into the sixties during the daytime, the fish would have held. We threw gulps for about an hour and had a couple of other hits. I had a ball watching Mindy and Mackenzi fish my little spot. Hopefully, this was the first of many family fishing outings to that area. We arrived around 10:45 and fished until noon and the peak of the lesser high tide was around 11:15. This was a four tide day. Once the tide was slack, we had no other hits.
